Why Your Hardware-Store Copy Won't Start the Car
Since the late 1990s, most cars have a small transponder chip in the head of the key. When you turn the ignition, the car checks that chip, and if it doesn't recognize it, the engine won't start (or starts and dies). That's why a plain metal copy from a hardware store may open the door but won't run the car.

Signs of a Transponder Problem
A flashing security or key light on the dash, a car that cranks but won't fire, or an engine that starts and immediately shuts off can all point to a key the car no longer recognizes. Sometimes the chip is damaged, and sometimes the key just needs to be reprogrammed. We can test it on site.

How do I know if my key has a chip?
If your car is from roughly 1998 or later, it very likely does, especially if the key has a thick plastic head. Tell us the year, make and model and we'll confirm.
